Acknowledgement of Country

The Australian National Maritime Museum acknowledges the Gadigal people of the Eora nation as the traditional custodians of the bamal (earth) and badu (waters) on which we work. We also acknowledge all traditional custodians of the land and waters throughout Australia and pay our respects to them and their cultures, and to elders past, present and emerging.

Endeavour Voyages as part of the Encounters 2020 program

2020 marks 250 years since Captain James Cook and the HMB Endeavour charted the East Coast of Australia. The 1770 scientific voyage set the scene for subsequent waves of migration that have shaped modern Australia.

For the First Peoples of Australia, custodians of the continent for over 60,000 years, Cook’s voyage was the most consequential encounter by early Western explorers as it heralded the beginning of a fundamental change to their way of life.

This anniversary offers a unique opportunity for all Australians to reflect on, discuss and re-evaluate the lasting impact this pivotal event has had on us all and, in particular, the repercussions on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

The Australian National Maritime Museum will deliver a program, Encounters 2020 which will utilise this historic event to examine from the dual perspectives of from the ship and from the shore.

Through a curated series of exhibitions, localised events and educational outreach initiatives Encounters 2020 will encourage community engagement, discussion and debate about our past and our future. A key part of the program will be the Endeavour Voyage Program to provide a focus for this engagement.

By sailing on the Endeavour during this time you will get a once in a lifetime experience and learn new skills. This will be unlike other replica Endeavour voyages. You will take part in an exciting new way of looking at history. You will experience not only life as it was for Cook and his crew but also gain greater understanding of Australian history from multiple perspectives. You will hear and learn from local communities about the lasting impact of Cook’s role in Australian history.
